Impulse Control Disorders
Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are prevalent psychiatric diseases that frequently result in severe impairment in social and occupational functioning and the possibility of legal and financial issues for those suffering from them. Despite evidence that ICDs are widespread, neither the general public nor clinicians or people with the diseases have a good understanding of them. Pharmacotherapy trials have shown that some ICDs respond effectively to treatment.
Pathological gambling (PG), kleptomania, trichotillomania (TTM), intermittent explosive disorder (IED), and pyromania are examples of formal ICDs.These diseases are defined by challenges in overcoming cravings to engage in excessive and ultimately harmful actions to oneself or others.
